Quote #1
"As i swallowed my bowl of soup, I saw in the gesture an act of rebellion and protest against him"(Wiesel 76).
Everyone was fasting during their time of need, hoping that their lord would save them. Elie didn't believe in god anymore. He thought that God didn't care about him anymore because he would not save them. Why fast if you were starving, Elie thought. He saw no reason in praying anymore because he had no belief. Elie saw an act of rebellion and protest against god when he refused to fast like everyone else who still had faith. Elie thought he had no reason to try to live when there was no one he believed in.
Quote #2
"Around me everything was dancing a dance of death"(Wiesel 95).
Dancing a dance of death is an analogy because obviously nobody was dancing that night when he lay in an old shed with many people lying dead. When your dead you do not dance therefor he was saying something but meaning the opposite. Dead people cannot dance, but i think Elie means something really deep. Dancing a dance of death is referring to people that were on the verge of dying limping around like dolls. Elie compared limping to dancing to lighten the dreary feeling that took place on that unholy night.

Night Quote Analysis/Section 3
Quote # 1
"We're on the threshold of death, soon we shall have crossed over"(Wiesel 45).
The threshold of death is symbolized by the crossing over from living to dying. A threshold is like a gateway and when they cross over the threshold of the crematory they will enter death. Yechiel believes that they all are going to be murdered by the SS or because of their harsh conditions including their lack of food. There is really no way of surviving in a concentration camp or in a ghetto. The SS are going to get rid of you if you don't die do to the living conditions. I think Yechiel knows that but he won't tell Elie because he doesn't want him to freak out or kill himself like he was thinking about before. Because Elie would much rather kill himself than make his father watch the death of his son. So they all think death will come eventually but they are all still unsure about when it will happen.
Quote #2
"A dark flame had entered into my soul and devoured it"(Wiesel 46).
Elie feels like his soul has been devoured by darkness. Devoured implies being taken or torn away from him, so his pure and innocent heart has been torn and ripped by the dark flame that he is talking about. I strongly believe that this dark flame symbolizes the evil side of Elie. This dark side of Elie appeared when he thought out a well developed plan for his own suicide because he couldn't stand the thought of being murdered. This is when the unpleasant side of him was revealed to the readers.

Night Quote Analysis/Section 1-2
Quote 1
"Why did i pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?" (Wiesel 14)
Doubt is easily noticed in this quote because the character is thinking to himself. He was asked a question about himself that he didn't quite know the answer to therefor he asked it again in his head. Someone asked why he cried while he prayed and he answered "i don't know why", again because he was unsure of himself. He felt disturbed and ill because he had never known why he wept while he prayed. All he knew was that something inside of him had the need for tears, and that was why he cried. I think that this character had something wrong in his first couple years of life that gave him the need to cry while he prayed or even pray in the first place. Dun Dun Dun DUNN !!!
Quote 2
"With every groan of the wheels of the rail, we felt that an abyss was about to open beneath our bodies" (Wiesel 34)
Forshadowing pain and suffering later on in the novel, this quote reveals the awakward death everyone is feeling on the train. The passangers feel that since one lady is going insane that maybe sooner or later they will all go insane. And they feel pity for the poor old lady and her young boy that are terrified on this trian while eveyone else is just chilling. I feel that the passengers are all keeping to themselfs until one of them blows up or something to cause a turning point in this novel :o

Powerless
Powerless
Lennie feels powerless throughout the novel because he isn't very intelligent. He also feels powerless because his decisions are always being judged or criticised by George. George controls Lennie's actions all of the time so he rarely gets to think for himself. The only time Lennie felt powerful is when he killed Curley's wife. Lennie made a mistake when he did that and he would have gone to jail if George wouldn't have killed him. Even though Lennie dies, it was probably the best thing to do. If George didn't do it, Curley would have.
The only time i have ever felt powerless was when i fell from the air during a stunt at cheer practice. I cant catch myself when I'm 10 feet above the ground so i was depending on my bases. They didn't catch me so i tumbled to the floor very hard. I felt very powerless because i couldn't do anything to save myself from falling. It was my bases job to catch me and they didn't so i couldn't do anything but wait until the ground caught up with me.
I was truly powerless during my fall. When your falling from the air you cant do much but wait until you hit the ground. I had no options but to close my eyes and hope i wont break anything. It was very frustrating for my to have to wait until i hit the ground. My bases , whom i depended on didn't do their job and that made me very mad. It wasn't my choice to fall but it was my choice to get back up. When you fall in life you have to always get bakc up and try again. :)

An Outsider's View
An Outsider's View
Crooks is an African American with a crooked back. He separates himself form the rest of the world because he does not want to start any problems with anybody. Because he is black, people don't mess with him. And he does not get messed with . Crooks doesn't start any problems nor wants anyone to start any. He just keeps to himself most of the time and hopes to stay out of the a way. Keeping to himself causes problems in his life. He cant work at certain places because the white folk will mess with him. He can't hold a job because he knows he is disliked.
I usually never get made fun of about my color because around here every one is pale. People only talk about how they want to be as tan as i am, but i just want to be like every one else. Kids do make fun of my height though. I cant do anything to change how short or tall i am, i can only be nice to people and hope that they wont make any comments about my height. Every now and then my friends will make fun of me because it but i just laugh and ignore it. There is nothing i can do, just like crooks cant do anything about his race i cant do anything about my height.
I did not like being called names for my height. I'm usually called names like squirt, shrimp, smalls, or shorty. Crooks was called names like nigger because of his race. Being called names is never a good feeling. You just have to learn to ignore people and go on with your life. All of my friends are tall and i don't like being the only small one around them. But i just have to forget about it, and ignore it. I'm always treated different because of it. I cant help being short , its in my genes. I just go on with my life and stand up for myself with kindness. There is no point in getting mad about it because it is the truth. You just have to not let it interfere with your life.
